Spinal trauma is injury-related damage to the spinal column and spinal cord, as well as the bones that surround the spinal cord. Damage to the spinal cord can permanently alter how the body functions because it contains nerves that transmit signals from the brain to the body. An impact to the spine that fractures, dislocates, compresses, or compresses one or more of the vertebrae can result in a spinal cord injury (vertebrae).
